Massage and Spa Tables Buyer's Guide
If you’re new to the massage therapy world you might be asking yourself what type of massage table you should go for. The answer we can give you is that as a newbie, a portable massage table is your go to. However, then you have to pick adequately the model, the size, and other things based on your needs. It’s clearly very subjective.
The same applies to spa owners that are looking to add new stationary massage tables to their workplace and aren’t yet convinced of which brand or model will suit their spa more. It still narrows down to a very subjective point of view. Everyone is different and looking for different things.
At Massage Tables Pro we have come up with a Buyer’s Guide to try and help all of our customers make the right choice. We are not looking to make you buy the most expensive table, but to buy the one that really is the best fit for your business.
Portable Massage Tables
A portable massage table is the best choice for anyone starting out, it costs way less than a stationary table, and it will give you the possibility to go around offering your services in houses, offices or different spas. You can take it anywhere, it’s easy. Nonetheless, you want to make sure you consider other features, like the materials the massage table is made of.
Now, you want to buy tables with good and long lasting materials. First of all, a key feature is the Upholstery. Make sure that the upholstery of the tables you are buying is water and oil resistant, in order for that table to have a longer lifespan. A good material to go for is Polyurethane Upholstery that’s 100% Chlorofluorocarbon Free. Most tables come with this upholstery, but still check for it.
Also, a good way of knowing how good the upholstery might be, is reading about the guarantee that it comes with. Certain tables offer 5 years warranty on their upholstery, others only 2 years, and others 1 year. If it's 5 years, you'll know it's built to last. If it's only 1 year, it doesn't mean it's bad, it might be because it's the standard warranty the manufacturer offers, but it's always good to have more. Here is an example of a table with a 5 year warranty covering the upholstery.
The color is another factor to think about. Darker upholsteries won't damage as quickly, as most things in life. White, or light colored tops tend to get dirty or stained much more easily, than a darker blue, black, grey or brown.
The thickness is another key feature. Is the foam protected by the upholstery thick enough for the client to feel absolutely comfortable? Here it's mostly your choice, from 2" to 3.5" is the standard. 2.5" being a very good thickness, although more than that always means additional comfort, but it will cost you more. 2" might be a bit slim for very heavy clients, but it still gets the job done. We recommend 2.5" upwards.
Keep in mind a KEY factor of the foam thickness. It can even be a 6" thickness, but if it's not dense, then it won't be very comfortable. What matters more then the thickness of the foam, is its density. If the foam is dense, it can still be 2" thick and be more comfortable than a 6" thick foam not dense enough. Read about the quality of the foam, if it's dense, if it has one, two or three layers (three is good enough), and if it has at least a layer of memory foam which is normally very dense and very comfortable.
Wood or Aluminum?
This is one of the subjective choices. Some prefer the wooden finishes, others the aluminum, it really depends on each and every person. Normally, the lifespan of both tables is going to be similar, there isn’t really much of a difference. Maple or beech wood is commonly used to build wooden frame chairs. Maple wood is a very reliable material, strong, steady, with a good lifespan and it won’t let you down. Beech wood might be a bit less durable, however, a said before, the difference is minimum.
Steel or aluminum frames are considered to be a bit stronger, for heavier support strength, but as to the lifespan or weight, they are pretty much the same. The advantage they might have over wooden frames is that a bump against any surface won’t really ruin the looks of the frame, whilst wood seems to “sink” after a bump.
There are different portable massage tables with different weights. You ace the super lightweight tables, which go from 24 lbs to 26 lbs. One of the lightest tables, if not the lightest one, is the New Wave Lite by Pisces (look at it here), or then yo have the Dharma Super Lite (look at it here), which are both consider super lightweight models, and preferred for MTs that have to move a lot, and carry it to many places.
You have standard lightweight tables which go from 27 lbs to 29 lbs. These are most of the portable massage tables, and they are light enough to easily carry them around, and stilla re strong enough.
Then, finally, the tables that go from 30 lbs upwards, normally all the way to 35 lbs. These are what we like to call Professional Massage Tables. These are portable tables that can even seem a stationary one. Moving them around is hard, as they are heavy, normally wider, longer and a bit more uncomfortable to handle, but they will make a difference on a client.
If you have a studio where you receive clients and don't move around as much, don't go for a super lightweight or a standard weight table, maybe it's better for you to go for a heavier but stil professional massage table. They are more affordable than a stationary table, and work very well (take a look at a model here).
All tables will normally have an adjustable height. This is fundamental for the therapist to have an easier job. Adjust the height depending on your height; make sure it’s comfortable and safe for you to work. Check up the height adjustment range to make sure it works for you! If there is one thing as an MT that you want to avoid, is bending over too much, or putting too much weight on your lower back. Hence why a good table will adjust a many different heights, so that it's perfectly comfortable for you.
This applies for stationary and portable massage tables. Do you generally work with bigger clients? Because if you do, you’ll want extra wide tables, from 30" onwards. This will ensure that your clients all feel comfortable on the table. Smaller tables, from widths going from 25” to 28”, are for slim or smaller clients. They have the advantage of being cheaper and lighter to carry around, but they also support less weight and are not very comfortable for bigger clients.
Heated Table Top
Some tables, for example the Master Massage Therma Top line of tables, come with heatable tabletops incorporated. They have a sort of electric control that will allow you to heat the top for clients to have a warm sensation that soothes their muscles and offers an added comfort.
You can choose to either buy tables with such technology, or even better, just buy a heat pad. At Massage Tables Pro we recommend heat pads as they offer a 2-in-1 function, they warm the table, as well as protecting or covering the upholstery, Electro Warmth being our best brand for heating pads. Plus, most of the pads that we sell are machine washable. Generally, it will be cheaper for you to buy the table and the pad, than buying a ThermaTop table, although this last option makes your life easier, as well as looking fancier and more luxurious to the eyes of a client.
Don’t forget the importance of accessories. Mot of the massage tables are shown with face cradles or arm rests, but they might not include them. Before you make any purchase, don’t just look at the picture, but read the description to make sure the table will include face cradle and or armrests.
If they don’t, read the section below related on which cradles or armrests you should choose. There are also different varieties of head rests and face cradles (which we discuss in more detail further below). Also, arm rests have also different designs, from swinging to detachable, so think about your needs. Swinging armrests tend to be a favorite among many clients, for how comfortably they can rest their arms in from of their heads while receiving upside down therapy.
This is key; this is something you want to check for. The average lifespan of a portable massage table is of three years, but it can vary depending on brand, size, model, and the usage you give to it.
Certain brands will give you a five-year warranty; this means that the table is a great buy. Others will normally give you a two-year warranty, which is more common. Others will only give you a one-year warranty on the upholstery, which wears off before anything else.
Take a deep look into the warranty offered by each model. If it only covers the upholstery, it doesn’t mean that the table is bad, not at all. It just means that the upholstery will probably give up before the frame, but if you protect it with table covers and sheets, it’ll be fine.
Also, keep in mind that Massage Tables Pro offers no warranties; we pass along the warranty offered by the brands we sell.
Make sure you get the adequate carrying case for your table. Most models or brands offer carrying cases for their tables, that’s what you want. They are designed for the specific tables to fit those cases. However, some tables don’t need a case and can be folded and carrier around because they were designed that way.
Nonetheless, at Massage Tables Pro we recommend to get a case as it protects the table from bumps, scratches or simply dust, thus increasing the lifespan and durability. Caring for your table will help it last longer and allow you to have a steadier business. We know clients who have owned their tables for over 20 years, thanks not only to the quality and excellent care, but because they had the right cases to store them, move them around and protect them.
Stationary Massage Tables
If you own a spa, a salon or receive clients at your home or any other workspace, you’ll want a stationary massage table.
These cost much more then the folding massage tables, but they have a longer lifespan and include many more features that make them overall, much better. However, keep in mind that these are for therapists that have decided to transition into a more “stationary” business model, or for spa and studio owners.
At Massage Tables Pro we personally recommend the stationary massage tables that include an electric lift feature. It’s normally a motor that can be operated by a hand switch or a foot pedal. Just press the right button and adjust the height, or the backrest or even the footrest. This way your life and your job will be much easier. From personal experience, having to adjust height manually, is a time consuming process that also can become annoying. With an electric lift, it will all be easier. Here is an example of an excellent electric massage table.
The base of the table is very important. Is it strong? What’s the material? And does it add value to the table?
Touch America is one of our favorite manufacturers as it builds heavy-duty tables, with an incredibly strong base, many times made of beautiful maple wood, or other materials that will look great in your spa, and last long. Also, they add bases with storage spaces for towels, sheets or oils. Trust us, there is nothing like a stationary massage table with a storing compartment in it’s base, that way you save space in the work area, as well as saving money not having to buy a trolley or a cart.
Purpose of the table
Many stationary tables are designed with multi-purpose features. This is great; as they will allow you to do basically any therapy you want, from back massages, to pedicures or other treatments. Preferably, buy a multi-purpose table, they might be a bit pricier, but they will make your work life easier.
However, this mustn’t be overlooked. If you offer wet treatments, you’re better off buying tables specifically built for wet treatments. If you like Himalayan Salt treatments, we sell tables specifically for that (and by the way, they are amazing!). Or of you’re only into traditional massage therapies, there is no use in you buying tables that adjust for Pedicures.
Some spas need to move around their tables a lot. Because the stationary massage tables are so heavy, usually over 250 pounds, then having wheels or a rolling feature is ideal. This will help you move them from a room to another, or simply move them inside the workspace to clean or to have a better use of the space whilst not offering any therapy.
Yes, you read that right: looks. The looks of the tables are really important. You don’t want to buy a table that won’t look right on your work place; especially of you own or manage a high-end or luxurious spa. You want the looks of your stationary massage bed or table to portray to all of your clients the quality of the treatments you offer. You want to dazzle them with a gorgeous looking item that at the same time is incredibly comfortable and will make them have an overall great massage or therapy session. Don’t overlook this!
Hydraulic massage tables are considered the best by experts, manufacturers, massage therapists, spa owners, studio owners and even clients. Their comfort is unbeatable, their features, characteristics and mechanics are simply the best. Yes, they are expensive, but they are worth it.
Most of them are ADA Compliant, which means they apply for a tax credit, for more information about such credit click here.
Anyways, what differentiates a hydraulic table from a standard electric table are the following features:
- Tend to have adjustable sections, that's more than one section. Usually you can adjust back, center and knee or leg section, but sometimes even more than 4 sections.
- Each adjustable section can move independently to accomodate the client in the most comfortable position
- The sections are adjusted by an electric motor or a control, not manually
- The movement of the sections is incredibly smooth
Head Rests, Bolsters and Arm Rests
These are all accessories or add-ons for your tables, whether portable or stationary.
Let’s start with the headrests and face cradles, which are pretty much the same. A Head Rest is an attachment that supports and positions the head and face, which is then complemented by a face pillow which goes on top of it.
It inserts into one or both ends of the table, though holes that each table should have. You’ll need to make sure that the cradle you buy will fit the table you have. That depends a lot on the brands, but generally all of the face cradles or headrests follow a standard dimension. Standard dimensions are as follows – outside to outside 8”7/8, with 7/8” diameter holes. In theory, if your table has these dimensions, then many face cradles will fit into it, and you can buy models from other manufacturers that might be more comfortable.
|Traditional Headrests:||Non-Traditional Headrests|
Stronglite (new models)
Stronglite (older models)
The comfort depends a lot on the pillow pad that each cradle has. If it’s made of memory foam, and with more of 3.5” of thickness, you can be certain that it will be comfortable and clients will be falling asleep during the therapy. Take a look at face pillows here.
There are different types of headrests, so let's take a look at them.
The Standard Head Rest (an example here) is a great backup. It is always a cheaper option, and although they are comfortable (mainly if you use a good pillow), they have the disadvantage of not being adjustable. However, head rests are know for breaking at some point, no matter which brand or how new, they just do. That's why having a backup standard head rest is always a great idea.
The Adjustable Head Rest usually comes with a single lever to adjust it (take a look at
an example here). Thanks to this lever, you can adjust both the tilt (angle) and the height to which the head rest is positioned. Normally, the face pillow is sold together with it as a package, but in case it isn't, it's still a great foundation for any pillow pad. Most manufacturers use this design.
Bolsters are a game changer and we will even say that they are a must have for any therapist. They are an add-on, basically a cushion that massage therapists use to put under certain parts of the bodies of their clients. The idea is to relieve the clients from tension in those areas, or use them as supports to change their postures and target specific parts of the body for massage.
Here the brand isn’t really relevant, what matters is the size and the shape. You might want a Full Round Bolster, big enough to completely adjust the posture of a client when positioned under their lower back. You might want a half round bolster to place under the legs to enable a better thigh massage. These are just examples of where or how to use them. We have found that half round bolsters tend to be the best, for their size, shape and portability. However, again, it depends on what you want and what you offer.
Armrests are incredibly useful and we also encourage our customers to buy them. They can be used on most tables, and like face cradles, they tend to be able to fit any table, but make sure you check on that. MT Massage offers a fantastic support, an Armsling, which basically works with a Velcro, and it can fit any table. It will allow clients to place their arms in front of them, on this hanging armsling. It’s very comfortable for them.
Pisces offers a front armrest too, a similar concept to the armsling, but specifically designed for their tables. It’s very comfortable, and even better than the armsling. If you have a Pisces Productions massage table, this is a must have.
At Massage Tables Pro we offer a lot more accessories or supplies. We sell oils, creams and lotions, as well as Hot Stone Therapy Sets, trolleys and carts, or table sheets and covers. All of these additional accessories can come in handy for any MT, spa or studio.
